European Mobility Week (EMW), held annually between September 16–22 and coordinated nationally by the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (UMT), was celebrated in Ankara with the participation of citizens.
During the “Car-Free Day” event organized by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, attendees included Jürgis Vilčinskas, Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to Türkiye, Dr. Şengül Altan Arslan, Deputy Secretary General of UMT, and Adem Yılgın, General Manager of EGO.
Also, events hosted by Keçiören Municipality were attended by Mayor of Keçiören Dr. Mesut Özarslan and UMT Deputy Secretary General Feridun Ulutaş.
Arslan: “The main goal is to change individual habits and encourage local decision-makers toward sustainable transportation.”
Speaking at the event, Arslan emphasized that UMT has been coordinating EMW at the national level since 2018 and continues to support municipalities throughout the process. She noted that municipalities across Türkiye are enhancing urban quality of life through projects such as sustainable transport plans, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and smart mobility systems. Arslan highlighted the importance of these events in raising public awareness.
She added that UMT contributes not only through awareness campaigns but also by strengthening institutional capacity.
Ulutaş: “When we say ‘Mobility for Everyone,’ we mean safe and sustainable transportation for everyone.”
Ulutaş stated that UMT actively works in urban mobility and transportation, one of the most vital public service areas managed by municipalities. These efforts aim to build institutional capacity, reduce environmental impact, and improve citizen satisfaction and quality of life.
He explained that the Urban Mobility and Transportation Commission within UMT brings together NGOs, academics, professional chambers, and international stakeholders to develop more inclusive policies. By tracking best practices locally and globally, stronger strategies are formed. Ulutaş also noted that municipalities continue to receive infrastructure and financial support through international grants and funds.
Recalling this year’s theme, Ulutaş said: “When we say ‘Mobility for Everyone,’ we’re talking about transportation that is accessible, affordable, safe, and sustainable for everyone regardless of age, income, or location.”
As part of the event, UMT organized a bicycle-themed quiz competition. Winners received their prizes from Keçiören Deputy Mayor Dr. Atila Zorlu and UMT Deputy Secretary General Feridun Ulutaş.
