JICA Visit to UMT

JICA Middle East and Europe General Manager Hideki Matsunaga and Chief Representative of JICA Türkiye office visited UMT for cooperation talks on the healing of the wounds of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake.

Due to the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş on 6 February, UMT Secretary General Dr. Hayri Baraçlı and Chief Representative of JICA Türkiye Office came together at the UMT headquarters. In this context, a meeting was held with the JICA delegation with the participation of JICA Middle East and Europe Director General Hideki Matsunaga.

At the meeting, the situation and responsibilities of the local governments in the disaster area were conveyed to the JICA delegation by the UMT Secretary General Dr. Hayri Baraçlı. As a result of the meeting, it was envisaged to cooperate on technical knowledge and technology transfer for reconstruction in the disaster area.

Experiences are shared within the scope of the project

After the completion of the Note Verbale exchange between Türkiye and Japan regarding the entry into force of the Technical Cooperation Agreement, implementation documents regarding the "Capacity Increasing Project of Local Governments for Waste Management and Pollution Control and Disaster Management and Response" were signed at a ceremony held on November 9, 2022 between the UMT and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The project aims to increase the capacity of our municipalities in the fields of disaster management and solid waste management, study visits and training activities are also envisaged for municipalities in Japan within the scope of the project. Within the framework of the project, a delegation of mayors made a study visit in Tokyo, Kobe and Kamikatsu between 29 January and 3 February.
