Şahin Elected as CEMR Vice President

President of Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (UMT) and Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Fatma Şahin was elected as CEMR Vice President at the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) Political Committee Meeting held in Paris, France, on 5-6 December.

During the meeting, elections were held for the presidency, co-presidency, executive bureau and financial committee members. Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Hayrettin Güngör, Osmaniye Mayor Kadir Kara, Tokat Mayor Eyüp Eroğlu, Lüleburgaz Mayor Murat Gerenli, Ürgüp Mayor Mehmet Aktürk, Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Council Member Neşe Ay and Keçiören Council Member Cemal Baş attended the meeting, representing the UMT.

Gunn Marit Helgesen, director of the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities, became the new president of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions at the meeting. In addition, UMT President and Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin was elected as the CEMR Vice President.

At the Political Committee Meeting, solutions to the Ukraine crisis, the role of local and regional governments in promoting social cohesion, environmental problems, the energy crisis in Europe and equality of opportunity for women and men were discussed.

The delegation also visited Refik Ali Onaner, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Paris.
