Şahin Attended Green Finance Conference in London

The Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (UMT) President and Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin spoke at the "United Kingdom - Türkiye Green Finance Conference", which was held in London in cooperation with the United Kingdom and Türkiye, proposing an environmentally sensitive economic model.

“We are together so that children to not die, people to not migrate and people live”

In his speech, President Şahin touched upon issues such as green transformation, migration, local development and green financing, and emphasized the importance of cooperation to be developed between Türkiye and the UK. Drawing attention to the problems in the world such as war, climate crisis and environmental pollution, Şahin said, “We are together for green power, for a cleaner world. We are together today so that children to not die, people to not migrate and people live.”

“We have a claim about our own city, our own country, we have a goal”

Noting that Gaziantep has been chosen as a green city and a champion city recently, Şahin said, "We do not do these things just to become a "green city", a "champion city". There is a new generation development. Now development starts in local. Democracy starts in local and cities compete. There is a great competition. Whoever finds and manages knowledge is the strongest. Knowledge is power. In the entire history of civilization, those who hold knowledge speak the word of the world. That's why we have a claim and a goal about our own city, about our own country. We are working on the topics declared by our President in the manifesto of local governments. Smart cities, healthy cities, cities that add value, brand cities… Each topic is our field of duty. On the one hand, while we are trying to do these things, on the other hand, there is a huge war behind us. If we had done what many countries have done today, the world would have heard the news that about 500 thousand people died in the Aegean and Mediterranean.”

“A strong will and climate has emerged between the two countries”

Şahin, who also shared the developments in the field of migration, clean energy, education, city economy and tourism in Gaziantep, said, “We created a model; Gaziantep model. Coexistence model. Living together model. This is not an easy thing. On the one hand, you will give the expectations of the society from you, on the other hand, you will work with your local power to solve this big problem.”

Noting that there is a strong will and climate between the two countries in order to accelerate the transformation into a green industry, Şahin said, “Everyone is aware of the what's at stake and when everyone works in this field, who will win? The world will win, humanity will win, cities will win.”

At the conference held in London, where President Fatma Şahin went as a day-to-day; Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum, Treasury and Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati, Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Mehmet Emin Birpınar, COP 26 President Alok Sharma, UK's Minister of State for International Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan, many public, private sector representatives and local government representatives also took part.
