European Mobility Week, coordinated nationally by the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (UMT) since 2018, officially began today in Eskişehir, hosted by the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality.
The campaign, held annually since 2002, is themed this year as “Mobility for Everyone,” emphasizing the need for transportation to be accessible, safe, affordable, and sustainable for all.
At the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by Jurgis Vilčinskas, Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation; Ayşe Ünlüce, Mayor of Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality; Ahmet Ataç, Mayor of Tepebaşı; Kazım Kurt, Mayor of Odunpazarı; and Dr. Şengül Altan Arslan, Deputy Secretary General of UMT.
Also in attendance were Austrian Ambassador Gabriele Juen, Mayor of Linz Dietmar Prammer, and representatives from civil society organizations.
Vilčinskas: “Culture and Creativity Flow Through Every Street”
Highlighting the city’s youthful and dynamic spirit, Vilčinskas said, “Although its name means ‘Old City’ Eskişehir is full of youth, vision, inspiration, and creativity. It’s an honor to be here.” He praised Eskişehir’s cultural vibrancy and its universities, stating, “Culture and creativity flow through every street.”
He emphasized that mobility is not just about buses, trams, or bicycles-it’s about people and freedom. “If a student can’t afford a ticket, a disabled citizen can’t board a bus, or a woman doesn’t feel safe at night, then mobility fails,” he said.
Citing examples from Europe, Vilčinskas noted that transforming highways into pedestrian zones in Paris initially faced resistance but ultimately led to cleaner air, thriving businesses, and lively streets. He reminded attendees that Eskişehir pioneered Türkiye’s first tram network and encouraged the city to once again lead with courage: “Promote clean transport, embrace electrification, and reclaim the streets for people. The European Union stands with you.”
Ünlüce’s Call: “Walk for Your City”
Mayor Ünlüce spotlighted the “Walk for Your City” campaign and expressed her goal to make Eskişehir a leader in walking. She said the week would be celebrated with walking, cycling, and public transport.
Looking ahead, Ünlüce announced that starting in 2026, every Sunday would be a “Car-Free Day.” “We’ll close some streets to traffic and hold festivals. We expect some resistance, but Eskişehir residents embrace our initiatives. Are we ready for a car-free day?” she asked. “Let’s make way for cyclists and pedestrians. Stick to public transport, pedal those bikes, walk and run.”
Ataç: “Urban Mobility Is Vital”
Mayor Ataç emphasized the health benefits of mobility and the importance of bike lanes in cities. He stated that mobility should be a continuous part of urban life, not just an occasional event. “Urban mobility is vital. It brings health, peace, and resilience to cities. As mayors, we must lead by example.”
Kurt: “Türkiye Is European”
Focusing on Türkiye’s relationship with Europe, Mayor Kurt said the event reaffirmed Türkiye’s place in Europe. “Regardless of the EU’s political stance, Türkiye is European and will remain so. A century ago, our great leader commanded us to reach and surpass the level of contemporary civilization. We consider ourselves European and hope our European friends see us that way too.”
Arslan: “We Aim to Make Cities More Livable”
Dr. Arslan noted that the events are not just celebrations but efforts to change habits and influence decision-makers. She emphasized the goal of making cities more livable and ensuring transportation is economical, reliable, and accessible for all.
She added that UMT is committed to raising awareness, strengthening municipalities’ institutional capacity, reducing environmental impacts of transportation, and improving quality of life.
Arslan: “We Strive for Accessible Transportation”
Referring to the 2025 theme “Mobility for All,” Arslan said, “Regardless of age, income, or location, we work to ensure transportation is accessible, affordable, safe, and sustainable.” She encouraged municipalities to consider diversity and reliability in their planning.
The event concluded with a group photo, a marching band performance, and a quiz competition organized by UMT. Prizes were awarded by Dr. Şengül Altan Arslan.
