UMT DELEGATION ATTENDS THE METROPOLIS 2026 GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN TANCA

A delegation from the Union of Municipalities of Turkiye (UMT) participated in the Metropolis 2026 General Assembly held in Tangier.

During the General Assembly, the activities carried out by Metropolis during the 2024–2026 period were evaluated, and the 2027–2029 Strategic Action Plan was discussed.

The meeting also featured comprehensive discussions on members’ priorities, cities’ capacity to develop collective solutions to common challenges, and opportunities for global cooperation among local governments. Membership certificates were presented to the Union of Municipalities of Turkiye (UMT) and Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, both members of the Metropolis Network.

As a result of the elections held during the General Assembly, Ramazan Demir, Acting Secretary General of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, was elected Treasurer of the Metropolis Board of Directors for the 2027–2029 term. In addition, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality was designated as a Metropolis International Training Institute (MITI) Training Centre.

During the sessions held under the theme “Cities as Places of Opportunity,” participants discussed inclusive cities, gender equality, nature-based solutions to climate change and sustainable urban mobility.

Muğla Mayor Ahmet Aras also took part as a speaker in the panel entitled “Inclusive Cities Work for Everyone,” where he shared Muğla’s initiatives in the fields of gender equality and inclusiveness.

Throughout the programme, UMT Deputy Secretary General Dr. Şengül Altan Arslan held bilateral meetings with local government representatives and international stakeholders from various cities.
