The “İstanbul on the Path to EU” Project was launched on April 26, 2012 by signing a Cooperation Protocol between Union of Municipalities of Turkey, Ministry of Foreing Affairs/ Directorate of the EU Affairs (Ministry of EU back then), the Governorship of Istanbul and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
The Projects general purposes were to provide the correct and effective implementation of the EU acquis at the local level; the governorship, district governorship and local governments in Istanbul to have sufficient knowledge and capacity on EU-related issues; local governments and institutions serving at local level to be able to adopt a course of action such as to support the Turkey’s EU accession process and to make the most of the opportunities offered by the EU in this process during that time.
Town twinning Program which was one of the main components of the Project was carried out under the coordination of Union of Municipalities of Turkey with the support of Ministry of the European Union in cooperation with the Governorship of Istanbul and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The main objective of the program is to enable 39 district governorships and district municipalities in Istanbul to exchange information and experience and offer joint projects with local counterparts in EU member states towards local practices of the EU acquis. Within the scope of the programme, 10 pilot districts from Istanbul were paired with EU member municipalities.
