Our Union carries out activities to represent our municipalities at national and international level, to follow and guide the international agenda on local governments, to ensure the exchange of information and experience on good practices in the world, to support municipalities affected by natural or social events and to encourage solidarity.

Our Union is a member of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and ensures the active participation of our municipalities in the Middle East and West Asia (MEWA) Section of this organization. The UMT also represents our municipalities in the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), of which national local administration associations can be members. In addition, our Union acts as the secretariat of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CoE Congress) and is the contact point of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) Türkiye Working Group. The UMT is also a member of the World Water Council.

Attaching importance to the representation of our municipalities in every field, our Union continues to expand its international communication network. In addition, the UMT develops projects and programs to support the work of our municipalities by carrying out joint projects with peer organizations and local governments in other countries.

Our Union carries out programs and projects to share information and experience with local governments of countries with which we have a common historical and cultural background, and supports the development of sister city relations to strengthen the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between countries.

Supporting our municipalities in the European Union (EU) harmonization process, our Union carries out activities to ensure that municipalities benefit from EU funds effectively and guides the implementation of the EU acquis on local governments.
